877 History

The following was extracted from notes and minutes found in the Two Bridges Lodge library.

On 29 September 1960, Canadian Masons and members of the Royal Canadian Air Force 3rd Wing in Zweibruecken Germany, held a meeting to discuss the possibility of forming a Masonic Lodge.

During a meeting held on 13 October 1960, it was agreed the name of the new lodge would be “Two Bridges Lodge No. 877. Using the Scottish Rite ritual, Elections were held and the following brothers were elected: Master - Brother Henderson; Senior Warden – Brother Heisler; Junior Warden – Brother Jackson; Treasurer – Brother Zurkewich; Treasurer – Brother Ogletree.

On 17 December 1960, with the sanction of the United Grand Lodge of Germany, Two Bridges Lodge No. 877 was Instituted by Past Deputy Grand Master Peter M. Rasmussen. (There were 34 members and 50 visitors present. The banquet that followed cost approximately 85 cents per plate.)

In the early 60's the RCAF 2 wing at Grostenquin in France was disbanded and enfolded into operations at RCAF 3 wing in Zweibrucken. (Either 1963 or early 1964) The French lodge on 2 wing was known as Ad Astra #54 and within Grande Loge Nationale Francaise. The Lodge was put into permanant darkness and and masons transferred to 3 wing were enfolded into Two bridges #877. I was one of those masons and have been with Two Bridges #877 ever since.

In 1968 the Lodge voted to assist local German Masons in founding a new German Lodge in Zweibruecken, now named “Zwei Brucken auf den drei saulen Nr. 905.

Also, in 1968, it was agreed the American members of Two Bridges Lodge No. 877, would gradually take charge of the Lodge when the Canadians departed Zweibruecken in the summer of 1969.

The American Brothers opened Two Bridges Lodge No. 877 for the first time, on 31 July 1969, using the New York ritual.
